Do You Catch A Cold Every Year?

“I am the sort of person that never gets a cold”

In my early teens I had the opportunity to attend an introductory presentation on Mind Power by John Kehoe and heard an exchange in the audience regarding people’s beliefs about sickness after the topic was introduced by John.

A gentleman stood up and announced that ever since he was a small child he had told himself that he was not the kind of person that caught colds and never did.  This prompted another gentleman to stand up and announce that ever since he could remember he had told himself he was good for 1 or 2 colds a year and he had them without fail.

This was my first introduction to the idea that the mind could somehow influence your health and I made a conscious decision from that moment on that I would also be the sort of person that never got colds.  I remember every time someone coughed in front of me this thought would come back to me.  I would not repeat it like some mantra or affirmation.  I already believed it.

Over the past almost 40 years since making that decision I have only succumbed to a cold or flu a few times and on those occasions I remember other things happening in my life that weakened my resolve.  Many more times I have noticed the onset of cold or flu like symptoms and told myself that a good sleep will be all that is needed to allow my body to fight off the infection and to the amazement of many that had tried to tell me I was catching a cold or flu I would meet them the next day free from symptoms.

I always noticed others that, on the onset of symptoms, seemed to resign themselves to the fact that they had already caught a cold.  I extended this observation to all sickness and those that seem to accept and surrender to sickness would succumb to it while those that rejected it would usually recover fast.
